Wednesday Movie Reviews.
I enjoyed watching the first movie which looked at a few different things such as Andres Bricks, Richard Long, Gilbert and George, Louise Bourgeois and Joseph Boyce. I really enjoyed looking at Louise Bourgeois who uses her own personal trauma to create her work, I really enjoyed how raw and intimate her work is. She uses her anger at her past experiences to empower herself when it would be so easy for her to just give up. We also looked at some artists who I didn’t quite like, such as a Gilbert and George who are known for being living sculptures, I didn’t find these artists interesting I liked the stuff they looked at such as religion and sex however I found their act rather weird and confusing and didn’t find myself connecting to their work. I really enjoyed this week's film as it brought to light some very interesting artists who I hadn't previously seen or heard of. I liked the questions we were given to answer and I found them very interesting to think about and look at.
Paint Showers
My favourite short film was the one named Paint Showers, I found it relaxing in a weird way it seemed very peaceful and it would be something I would watch to help me sleep. There was a lot going on as there was the visual elements as well as sounds, in a way I think the sounds were a little too loud and overpowered the visual elements a little as I found myself focusing on what I was hearing not what I was watching. The sounds resembled a rain storm with a slight static sound as well alongside the visual element that looked like paint drops the entire video did really resemble a paint shower, the entire video seemed really calming to me it was very bright and almost dream like it made me think of the artist Salvador Dali because of the bright colours as well as how the paint seemed to melt of the screen. I really liked the start of the film because of how the small drops of paint almost resembled fireworks and burst into larger more interesting drops. One of my favourite things about this video was how I watched it multiple times and each time I was finding new things to look at and listen to there is so much going on you miss a lot of stuff the first time as your initially overwhelmed by the loud sounds. This was my favourite short film due to the fact that I found the rest rather uncomfortable and overwhelming it was the only one I would watch again and actually liked.
Grayson Perry.
I didn’t like the Grayson Perry film because it looked at a lot of different things that didn’t seem to link. I felt like the film was jumping around a lot and it was hard to keep up, the film looked at things such as people doing up cars in order to express themselves. First, we look at male display and how these people spend so much money doing up cars for male display even though they don’t get used to their full potential, he shows that these people do it to show they have these things to display them to show off their skills and their appreciation of the aesthetics. Next, he looks at tattoos and why people get tattoos he comments on how people spend more money on how they look such as tattoos and cars not on their home and what they have at home. Next, we look at working class taste and he talks about why he wanted to create a piece of artwork on working class taste in the first place. We then looked at kitsch artwork which I didn’t really like as I found it rather tacky. Altogether I didn’t like this film I thought all the individual topics were interesting but I felt like the film was jumping from topic to topic too much as I just started to get interested in one part and then we were off to the next, it may work better if there was a series of smaller films,
Paul Stowe is an amazing pencil artist who turned professional in 2016, his work permanently resides in numerous galleries, including www.stowe.gallery. He specialises in portrait and still life work and has created some amazing pencil portraits which feature running water down the subjects faces. I really love this artist’s work due to the fact that he creates very detailed, intricate pieces which look both realist and aesthetically pleasing. Stowe uses smartly placed shadows in his work to create the realistic water like substance that runs down the subjects face as well as when he creates the water droplets in his work. I enjoy his work because when viewing his pieces you can see the time and effort which has been taken whilst creating them, Paul Stowe spends days and weeks at a time on one piece, which can really be seen in the details and clean finish which is frequent throughout his work.
Artists research

Paul Jackson is a unique artist inspired by sci-fi and surrealism he creates an almost supernatural vibe to his work, he is most well-known for his work which focuses on scientific failings where he incorporates glitches into his artwork. My favourite pieces of his work are the interesting drawings he does where he focuses on animals and the skulls of animals. He creates a dark, surreal image where the animal is almost being torn away from the skull. I think these scary and supernatural images are quite shocking to the viewer which makes them memorable. I like how he does not try to over complicate his work by adding colour or paint, he leaves them simple only using pencil and paper which allows him to get an amazing level of detail which creates a photo realistic drawing of the animal which he distorts and makes his own by adding the skull.
Angela Harding is an amazing print maker who mainly creates lino prints, she is really inspired by birds and animals therefore they feature in a lot of her work. I really love Angela Harding’s work due to the fact that the lines from the lino prints are very thick, so the images come out very bold, this as well as the small splash of colour makes Harding’s work extremely eye-catching. I particularly like the image with the crow, the black bird and simple branches and flowers look amazing with the bright red flowers. I love how the background of her images are very simple she does not try to over complicate her work she does just the right amount of detail without spoiling her art. I like how her work looks very textured and how she has taken the time to etch out her lino fully and correctly so that there is no bleeding of ink onto the white.

Paul Signac was a French Neo-Impressionist painter who helped to develop the style of pointillism alongside George Seurat. I love Paul Signac’s work because he created very minimalistic pointillism work which was bright and beautiful. Signac sailed the Mediterranean Sea painting the amazing views he encountered, therefore he focused mainly on landscape work and was most well-known for his pointillism paintings. My favourite thing about his work is how he uses such bright colours which draw the viewer in and keep them very interested. Even though he creates pointillism work rather then typical brush stroke paintings he manages to achieve an amazing amount of detail. I like the idea of creating landscape paintings in the pointillism style due to the fact that it is an interesting way to get a lot of texture into the work, I think the process of creating the work would also be very therapeutic and the end result would be worth the long process.
Gillian Lambert is an amazing distortion artist, who creates beautiful pieces where she creates self-portrait drawings by distorting her face using her hands or string or sometimes paint. I love Gillian Lamberts work because she creates her work for a very lovely reason Lambert wants to celebrate the weird and to battle the ideals of body image. She does this wonderfully and she shows many people especially women of today that looking different is okay and nothing to be ashamed of and that societies ideas of perfection are unsustainable. I love Gillian Lamberts work because of the message behind it and the effect it has on the viewers. Gillian Lambert is my go to inspirational artists who I always find comfort in, because of Lamberts work I have found an interest in distortion artwork.

Andy Butler is one of my favourite artists, he asks his subjects which parts of their body which they don't like and he takes it away he enlarges and turns the models features creating an amazing almost futuristic drawing. I really like the final outcomes of Butlers work due to the fact that Butler creates a very simple yet beautiful piece. I love how Andy Butler pays real close attention to his subjects asking them personal questions about themselves. I like how Butler does not over complicate his work he keeps his work very simple and clean and some times adds a colour in the background to make his drawing stand out. Alongside Gillian Lambert, Andy Butler is one of the artists which helped me find distortion artwork and I frequently take inspiration from both artists.
Tanya Shatseva creates incredible acrylic paintings. Her paintings are futuristic and strange and not initially what you think of when acrylic paintings are mentioned. Acrylic paint is not my go to medium and I don't typically work with it however for some reason I am drawn to Tanya Shatseva's work, I think her paintings are absolutely beautiful, I love how colourful and bright they are. they are realistic but also have a futuristic element to them which I think is why I am attracted to them. I would love to with a lot of practice to be able to create work like the work in which Tanya Shatseva creates. I am excited to work in this style in the future.

Kris Trappeniers creates these amazing continuous line drawings of peoples faces. I really like this artists due to the fact that continuous line drawings are very time consuming, the time and effort this artist has put into each piece is clear. I love this artists work because of how detailed the portraits look, inspired by this artist I have created numerous continuous line drawings with string, I found the process rather relaxing and found it very interesting when the image underneath the squiggly lines came threw and could be seen. the final outcome of continuous line drawings are amazing and thanks to the discovery of Kris Trappeniers work I was able to experiment in this style and found that I really love it.

I really enjoyed my trip to the Baltic, there was an exhibition called 'Against time' by Huma Bhabha. he presents sculptures made from plastic wood and wire as well as prints and photographs. Bhabha looks at themes such as war and memories of home. I really liked his work, i liked how expressive his work is. My favourite of his pieces is the photographs above i particularly like the one on the left due to how moody and expressive it looks i like how he has used the contrasting colours as it makes his work very memorable.
Laing Art Gallery.
I also viewed some virtual tours online at the Laing Art Gallery. One tour was called challenging conventions which looks at four female artists who all lived threw war they were all born at the end of the 19th century so not many female artists were celebrated. The art that is shown are amazing paintings created by amazing women who all went threw similar situations such as the war and the changes that women were going threw at this time. i found it really interesting learning more about the artists background then i would have learned if i viewed the gallery myself. i found the virtual gallery very impressive as it still allowed me to view some amazing exhibitions even though we were in a pandemic. i will defiantly be looking at more virtual galleries as i really enjoyed listening to the history behind the pieces.
